I would like to thank Margaret Van Dyk, Caroline Dechert, the award committee, and the other members of ARLIS/MW for providing me this opportunity to attend the ARLIS/NA annual conference in Seattle, Washington through the Winberta Yao Travel Award. As a new member of ARLIS, the annual conference was a wonderful way to meet and connect with other librarians and learn more about the issues facing the field of art librarianship.

I started the conference by attending the ARLIS/NA Mountain West and VRA Wild West Combined Chapters meeting on Wednesday morning. I enjoyed meeting the other members of our regional chapter and hearing news of what we have been working on as a group. My favorite part of this meeting was the opportunity to meet with other librarians in the chapter and discuss the work we do at our respective institutions.  I connected with several other librarians who are also new to the Mountain West region, and it was interesting share our reflections on our new work.

Immediately following the meeting, I attended the Getting in the Game: Three Free Tools that Take You from Flat Data to RDF workshop. I did not know quite what to expect from this workshop, and I was very pleasantly surprised by what I learned! As catalogers, most of us understand RDF only from a conceptual perspective. The leaders of the workshop presented a workflow for creating metadata for visual resources and creating these linked data relationships through RDF that simply made sense. We were introduced to several transformation tools created to aid in this process as well. The process itself was very similar to digital project workflows I have used in the past, and I left the workshop feeling a shift in my understanding from the conceptual to the practical.

This workshop also nicely complimented another session I attended—RDF and LOD in Use Today. The presenters of this session discussed their experience working with linked data and converting their data to RDF data through specific projects they have spearheaded in their libraries. Alongside this theme, I also decided to attend the ARLIS Cataloging Advisory Committee meeting. This meeting gave me a taste of how committees function within ARLIS/NA, as well as insight into the special priorities of catalogers in art libraries. What I learned through this meeting is that art libraries have very diverse metadata needs, which are dependent upon what they collect. Some people argued their need for very specific subject access, while others expressed their relative satisfaction with Library of Congress subject access and other controlled vocabularies. Being new to art librarianship, I found this discussion of specific institutional needs and the need for more specific cataloging standards very interesting.

One of my favorite ARLIS activities was the First Time Attendees and New Members Reception, where I connected with both new and seasoned members of ARLIS. Everyone participated in a fun, social game in which we were given a playing card and asked to find the person in the room with the same card. It was a nice icebreaker and an easy way to start a conversation with other ARLIS newbies. In search for my matching card, I met a Princeton art librarian, a federal librarian, the former director of IAIA, two Serbian librarians, and some very friendly and enthusiastic MLIS graduate students.

Another favorite session I attended was Do It, Make It: Current Initiatives and Advice on Creating a Makerspace in Academic Libraries and Visual Resources Centers. All three presenters had very different approaches to their makerspaces to fit the needs of their students. From Legos at Rutgers University for stress relief to a 3-D printer at the University of Maryland that helps support architectural students’ scholarship, I learned that makerspaces are fluid in their conception and use. At IAIA, we have experimented with some pop-up makerspaces during finals and midterms weeks to help take the edge off of testing stress. I left this session with many more ideas for low-cost, stress-reducing, and fun makerspace activities for our art students, and, a somewhat altered perception of the role of academic libraries in student life.

As inspiring as these sessions were, my two favorite sessions of the week were two sessions on diversity offered by ARLIS this year: Connecting Social Justice to the Workplace: Issues of Diversity in Our Professional Lives and the Diversity Forum.  The presenters for Connecting Social Justice to the Workplace interwove interdisciplinary research with their own social justice work and their personal experiences as people of color in the field of librarianship. They also offered participants resources, such as Stanford’s Diversity Toolkit, to help us start conversations about diversity within our own libraries and institutions. In the Diversity Forum, we had a group conversation about the lack of diversity in librarianship and the reasons behind it. We also had the opportunity to complete a worksheet on how we self-identify and why. In small groups, we had an open and honest conversation about our identity and how our self-identification affects how we perceive and treat others. My hope is that ARLIS/NA expands upon the forum and offers a workshop on diversity in librarianship in the near future.

In addition to the more formal ARLIS conference activities, I was happy to run into several colleagues of mine from my days as a graduate student at UNC Chapel Hill. It was wonderful to reunite and discuss the direction our careers have taken us over the past four to five years. One of these colleagues and I have decided to have periodic Skype sessions at the end of each semester to share our work offer each other feedback. Another of these colleagues is now a professor with the University of Washington’s School of Information Science and Medical School and lives in Seattle. Over green tea lattes at Moore Coffee Shop, we had a wonderful conversation about our respective work and how information systems help connect people to solve real life problems. I would not have been able to reestablish these connections without the Winberta Yao Award.

Reflecting upon my time in Seattle at the ARLIS/NA annual conference, I am filled with gratitude for this opportunity. I learned so much, met some wonderfully creative librarians, reconnected with former colleagues, and had the opportunity to do all of these things in a beautiful city. As a new ARLIS/Mountain West member, I look forward to future meetings and involvement in the chapter, as well attending the ARLIS/NA annual conference in future years. Thank you!

ARLIS/NA Mountain West + VRA Wild West Virtual Conference 2016 Call for Proposals

The ARLIS/NA Mountain West Chapter and The Wild West Chapter of VRA are teaming up to bring you a virtual conference in 2016. We would like to cordially invite you to submit proposals for the Virtual Conference 2016: Innovative Use of Art Resources and Marketing Success Stories.

The proposal deadline is Monday, March 7.

Based on the success of the Mountain West Chapter’s new virtual conference format, we are eager to use the virtual format again. Similar to the last virtual conference, we need a diverse set of presenters. If you have an interesting project that you are currently working on or recently finished, please consider submitting a proposal to present it to your peers. Please note, this call for proposals is open to any; not only members of VRA and ARLIS.

Perhaps you had a proposal turned down for the ARLIS/NA national conference. Here is another opportunity to share it!

Here are the details:

  • Presenters will have their talks prerecorded by a member of our chapter and posted to a private site online.
    • Conference attendees will be given access to the site and will be able to watch all the presentations at their leisure.
    • Each talk will be accompanied by a discussion board for questions and comments.
    • Sessions will be recorded in late October and posted in November.
  • A live Q&A session will happen in December with all the presenters.
    • Each person will have a set amount of time to take and answer questions.
    • This session will be moderated by a member of the Mountain West chapter.
    • The Q&A Session will be recorded and posted to the site if attendees are unable to watch in real time.

 

Requirements:

  1. Proposals should relate to the theme: Innovative Use of Art Resources and Marketing Success Stories.
  2. Presentations should be limited to 20 minutes.
  3. Presenter will work to find a time to record their presentation with a designated member of the Mountain West chapter.
  4. Presenter must be available for a live, virtual Q&A session on December 2.
  5. Each presenter will be asked to take questions for 10 to 15 minutes.

Congratulations, Jessica Mlotkowski

Congratulations to Jessica Mlotkowski, the 2016 recipient of the Winberta Yao Travel Award from the Mountain West Chapter of ARLIS/NA!

Jessica earned her MLIS from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2011, where her concentration was in the organization of information and materials.

Currently, Jessica is the Cataloger and Public Services Librarian at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), in Santa Fe, New Mexico. IAIA is the only four-year degree fine arts institution in the United States devoted to contemporary Native American and Alaska Native Arts.

Jessica’s academic focus has been on cataloging and metadata management for visual resources, as well as the role our cultural perspectives and perceptions play in the description and retrieval of those resources. Diversity, social justice, and bias in descriptive practices are themes that Jessica considers daily in her personal work.

In her letter of application, Jessica expressed the value of attending ARLIS/NA in Seattle, as she will have the opportunity to attend sessions on digitization projects, rights management, social justice, and diversity in our professional lives, and connecting collections to the open web. All of these themes will directly inform Jessica’s work at IAIA.

Please join us in welcoming Jessica Mlotkowski to our ARLIS/NA Mountain West Chapter and congratulating her on her upcoming attendance at the joint conference of ARLIS/NA and VRA in Seattle, Washington.

Winberta Yao Travel Award recipient’s report on the 2015 ARLIS/NA Conference

Thank you, Mountain West Chapter and Travel Award Committee members, for making it possible for me to attend the 2015 conference in Fort Worth. As a solo museum librarian, I seldom have the chance to discuss work with others in my field. This sort of discussion is crucial if we want to keep up to date and provide the best possible professional services to those who use our libraries. I am most grateful for the chance to attend so many excellent sessions, and, even more, for the impromptu discussions in hallways and on lobby sofas. I have come home refreshed with new ideas.

Here are notes on some of the sessions I attended.

What Can I do With This Image? provided concrete practical advice on switching from a model in which publication fees are regarded as a source of income to a more open model. There was also a good deal of buzz about the copyright research tool the Durationator (http://www.limitedtimes.com/). It was the subject of a poster session as well. The Durationator aims to be a comprehensive tool for researching copyright information worldwide. My big question remains how (un)affordable this might be for smaller museums and libraries.

What’s Your Story?: The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center Oral History Project — Eumie Imm Stroukoff, Emily Fisher Landau Director of the Research Center, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum

The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center is in the first phase of an oral project.  We are actively collecting stories about Georgia O’Keeffe from the people who knew her personally and employing a variety of methods to gather these stories. One way is by using telephone technology to gather recollections from visitors who audio record memories of personal interactions with Georgia O’Keeffe.  We are also conducting in-depth interviews with individuals who had friendships with her. Finally, we are collaborating with the Pueblo de Abiquiu Library and Community Center to collect stories as told by community members attending local events such as fiestas.  These stories and recollections give our visitors and researchers a rich context to learn about Georgia O’Keeffe as a person and as an artist. The audio recordings and supplemental materials (such as transcriptions, photographs, and biographies) will be ingested into the archives, making it possible for researchers to access and utilize them.  In addition, these recordings might be used for educational purposes as well as interpretive purposes in the galleries at the museum.

Bringing the Outside Inside: Brazilian Graffiti and “String Literature” on the Walls Are Not Your Typical Art in the Library Exhibit — Christiane Erbolato-Ramsey, Fine Arts Librarian, Harold B. Lee Library, Brigham Young University

Art exhibitions in academic libraries traditionally display works by visual arts students, faculty, or visiting artists. In an effort to strengthen the liaison between the Brigham Young University Lee Library and the area of Brazilian studies, two exhibitions were organized to bring exposure to otherwise inaccessible art forms in Brazil.  Both belong in dynamic, outdoor public spaces and are meant to be discovered by passersby. This poster session will provide an overview of these exhibitions and offer accompanying bibliographic material. One exhibition featured images and videos of major works by “grafiteiros” on the streets of inner cities in Brazil, projected on the gallery walls.  Brazilian graffiti has gained a significant role in voicing sociopolitical opinions and has become a frequent topic of research by students. The other exhibition presented a selection of the library’s unique collection of “literatura de cordel” (string literature), zine-like booklets containing the folk stories and covers illustrated with woodcuts.  These are hung on strings on the walls, in the way they are traditionally sold in the public open markets of Northeast Brazil.

Testing the Waters: Harnessing the Power of Technology in the Virtual Conference Environment — Luke Leither, Art and Architecture Librarian, University of Utah

Come and learn more about an experimental new format for virtual conferences attempted for the first time by the ALRIS Mountain West Chapter in the fall of 2014.  Having run virtual conferences over the last several years, our chapter has learned that many attendees find it nearly impossible to barricade themselves behind computer screens in their offices for an entire day.  We found that a stable platform allows our conference, conversations, critiques, and questions to take form over the course of weeks and months rather than a single day.  This promised to be a richer experience for everyone who participated.  Thus, the conference “Testing the Waters: Professional Experimentation in the Arts and Art Librarianship was born.

At this poster presentation, there will be a demonstration on how we used the course management software Canvas and the virtual meeting software AdobeConnect to host our content.  Our conference featured pre-recorded presentations attendees could watch at their own convenience, along with a live Q&A event for real-time interaction with our presenters.  This poster will cover the successes and failures observed with this model as well as the feedback we received throughout the process.
